Kentucky Derby: I Want Revenge OK morning after Derby scratch

Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — I Want Revenge appeared to be OK this morning, a day after being scratched from the Kentucky Derby with an ankle injury.

Veterinarian Foster Northrop said he planned to do another scan of the 3-year-old's left front ankle, but said the joint responded well after the colt jogged on the asphalt outside Barn 24 at Churchill Downs on Sunday.

Northrop said I Want Revenge will likely be sent to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington for further examination.

The Wood Memorial winner became the first morning line favorite to scratch the day of the Derby in at least 60 years after trainer Jeff Mullins discovered a hot spot on the ankle just hours before the race.

Owner David Lanzman opted to pull the horse from the Derby rather than risk aggravating the injury.
