MILILANI — Winning the 4x400 relay would've been great.

But Roosevelt was more than thrilled with finishing second.

The Rough Riders' second-place finish in the meet's final event yesterday sealed their first O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys track and field championship since 2002.

Roosevelt finished with 75.5 points to hold off second-place Leilehua, which finished with 66 at Mililani's John Kauinana Stadium. Roosevelt led Leilehua by just 3.5 points going into the 4x400.

"I knew we had to beat Leilehua (in the relay), and we did," said an ecstatic Alex Fowler, who led off Roosevelt's 4x400 relay team, won the long jump and placed second in the triple jump. "We wanted to take first (in the 4x400).

"I was pretty nervous."

Radford dashed away with the girls title, totaling 140 points. Mililani was second with 75.

The Roosevelt boys led Leilehua, 67.5 to 64, in the team standings heading into the 4x400. Roosevelt never trailed Leilehua in the relay, and finished second in 3:33.79 while Leilehua finished fifth. Kapolei won in 3:32.74.

"I see the whole team come down to support us and sacrifice their time to watch," said Roosevelt's Rowan Gragas, who ran on the 4x400 and won the 800. "It pushed me. I wanted them to see us do our very best."

Roosevelt held off a late charge by Leilehua, which scored 12 points in the 3,000 run, the meet's second-to-last event, with 1-2-3 finishes from Bryce Jenkins, Margarito Martinez and Shannon Cosey.

Jenkins won in 9:07.33, 15 seconds off his time of 8:52.27 that he ran April 17. That time would've broken the OIA championship meet record of 8:59.99.

"With Shannon and Margarito, all three of us, that's so much more rewarding than a record itself," Jenkins said.

Earlier in the meet, Jenkins broke the meet record in the 1,500 with a surprising sprint past Campbell's Christian Putegnat with about 150 meters left. He won in 4:03.73. It was a kick that few have seen from the three-time state cross country champion.

"It shows that I've improved," said Jenkins, who added that his 1,500 race affected him in the 3,000.

Kailua's Chauncy Makainai set a meet record in the shot put with a toss of 57 feet, 5 inches, recorded in Thursday's trials. Field marks can carry over to the finals.

McKinley's Solomon Dixon won the 200 and 400, and Kapolei's Hansen Ho won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

"I give it all my best," Ho said. "It's my senior year, I won't be able to run (next year)."

RADFORD GIRLS WIN

Bolstered by its sprinters, Radford won its first girls title since 1983 after finishing with 140 points.

Its 4x100 relay team of Tereza Palmer, Tyler Whitener, Andrea Hinkle and Kaeli Patton set a meet record in Thursday's trials with a time of 49.57. Yesterday, Radford won in 49.66.

"It means a lot; we've been working hard for it," Patton said of the relay record. "From the Punahou Relays (on April 23), it pushed us to run fast."

Behind a recent string of good practices, Patton also won the high jump with a leap of 5-4.

Whitener, a freshman, won the 100 and 400, and was second to Hinkle in the 200. Coming in, she knew she was entering a program with "good coaches that give good advice," and teammates that are "the bomb."

Kahuku sophomore Zhane Santiago won the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump and the triple jump with a record of 36-10 1/2 that she set in Thursday's trials. She won the triple jump and both hurdles at last year's OIA championships.

"I want to thank all my coaches, family and sister (teammate Tajana Santiago); they always help me," Santiago said.

Kaiser's Sage Hintnaus set the girls pole vault record with a clearance of 10-8. Mililani's Kristin Ali won the 1,500 and 3,000 and Kapolei freshman Charlinda Ioane won the shot put and discus.

"My mom (coach Davelyn Ioane) told me to focus on one event at a time," Ioane said.
