David Paul's Island Grill opening Wednesday

Maui-based chef-restaurateur David Paul Johnson returns to the culinary scene Wednesday after a long absence (when he was cooking for a private club) with the opening of his new restaurant, David Paul's Island Grill, at Lahaina Center, 900 Front Street, Suite A-101.

The 200-seat, sea-view restaurant will offer a market-based menu that changes daily, family-style platters and small plates as well as conventional entrees, a large number of wines by the glass, a walk-in wine cellar for premium quality wines by the bottle and multiple dining spaces. The style is "Tropical Chic, Island Cool" — slow food, comfort food, local and organic whenever possible. Price range is $18-$35 with most entrees under $30.

Hours: Dinner Tuesday-Sunday from 5 p.m., closed Monday; lunch service begins early August.

Reservations: 808-662-3000.
