Bond, Diaz selected Kauai's Outstanding Older Americans

LIHUE — Janice Bond, of Lihue, and Dr. Arnulfo Diaz, of Kapaa, were named Kauai's 2009 Outstanding Older Americans this morning.

The announcement was made at the 43rd annual Older American Awards Recognition Ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort.

They were selected from a field of 10 nominees that included Federico Acoba Jr., Sheila Drews, Sandy Gage, Stephanie Hughes, Sally Jo Manea, Emily Minei, Mildred Olores and Roy Tamashiro.

Since retiring as a teacher, Bond has been involved in numerous volunteer programs, including the American Cancer Society, Arthritis Association, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Visitor Aloha Society and a number of reading programs.

Bond has also served as a foster parent since 1980, and over the years has had 30 foster children.

A retired physician, Diaz has volunteered for many organizations, including the American Heart Association, Immaculate Conception Filipino Catholic Club, Kauai Filipino Chamber of Commerce, Kauai Filipino Community Council, Kauai Pangasinan Association; and the Wilcox Memorial Hospital Board of Directors.

Diaz and Bond will be honored at a statewide recognition ceremony at Washington Place on Oahu on May 21.
