Honoka'a dashes past Radford, 7-6

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kahale Artuyo's mad dash around the bases saved the day for Honoka'a last night against Radford.

Honoka'a blew a three-run lead in the top of the seventh inning only to score four in the bottom half to pull out an incredible 7-6 victory over Radford in the first round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division II Baseball Championships at Hans L'Orange Park.

Trailing 6-5 with two outs, Kahale hit a grounder to the second baseman and his throw to first was missed by the first baseman and bounced up against the wall.

Josh Umeda scored from second on the play to tie it, but Kahale wasn't done.

He noticed the first baseman lobbed the ball to the pitcher so he took off for third. The pitcher's throw got past the third baseman, enabling Kahale to come all the way around to score the winning run.

"Just go, just charge, whatevas," Artuyo said of the play. "When I saw the ball just go, I knew what to do, just take second, go third and go home."

The Dragons had three hits and benefitted from three errors in the inning.

The first two runs of the inning scored on a throwing error by the left fielder and Umeda's run-scoring double.

Radford had all the momentum entering the bottom of the seventh after scoring six runs in top of the inning.

The Rams scored all six runs with two outs. They had two hits, drew four consecutive walks and benefitted from two errors in the inning.

Dragons freshman left-hander Dylan Shiraki was in charge until tiring late against the Rams.

He worked 6 2/3 innings before giving way to Tyler Ortiz. Shiraki and Ortiz were both charged with three runs in the inning.

"I kind of felt the pressure, so I let down I guess," said Shiraki, who finished with nine strikeouts. "But good thing the team came through with hitting and finished the job."

MOLOKA'I 12, MCKINLEY 2

Farmers' starter Scott Rapanot needed one inning to get loose.

His offense was ready to go from the get-go.

Rapanot allowed two runs in the first inning before settling down and Keaka Kamakana drove in four runs to lift Moloka'i (9-3).

"The first inning was kind of rough," Rapanot said. "My arm was kind of sore. I had to work it in and then I finally got in the groove."

Rapanot, a 6-foot senior right-hander, worked 5 1/3 innings, and allowed just one hit and one walk after the first. He struck out seven and was replaced by Kainalu Mariano, who started at shortstop, with Moloka'i ahead 9-2.

The Farmers had three big offensive innings — a four-run first, a five-run fifth and a three-run seventh.

"Our bats came alive," said Moloka'i coach Honda Paleka. "All season we didn't have the bats come alive. We were struggling for runs and hits. I was hoping our hits would come in the state tournament, and they did."

KONAWAENA 8, KAHUKU 6

The Wildcats scored early and often, let most of their lead get away, and then held on for the victory.

Konawaena took a 7-0 lead after two innings before Kahuku got within one with three-run innings in the third and fifth. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the sixth.

Kahuku (9-5), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's No. 4 team, loaded the bases in the third on a walk, hit baseman and walk to start the inning. Justin Nozawa scored on a wild pitch, and Tima Tapusoa and Bryan Kukahiko had RBI groundouts to cut the deficit to 7-3.

The Red Raiders scored three more in the fifth to get within one, but Konawaena made it 8-6 in the sixth on a fielder's choice RBI by Kawika Karratti.

Todd batted 3 for 4 with five RBIs, and Craig Shoji allowed six hits in six-plus innings with six strikeouts for Maryknoll (3-14).

Todd's two-run single gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead in the second, and his second two-run single extended the advantage to 5-1 in the third. He added a run-scoring infield single in a six-run sixth inning.

Kaiwi, a junior left-hander, struck out 11 over four innings. The only out not recorded by strikeout came on a sacrifice bunt in the third.
