KBFD founder honored with degree
By Jeff Chung
KBFD TV founder and chairman Kea Sung Chung will be honored tomorrow in Warrensburg, Mo., with an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters during the University of Central Missouri's spring 2009 commencement.
Chung graduated in 1957 from the university — then called Central Missouri State University — earning a bachelor of science degree in business administration. The university is now recognizing Chung for his professional accomplishments.
Chung was one of a few South Korean students who was able to study in the United States in 1954. The Korean War had ended with an armistice just a year earlier, and it had only been three since North Korean soldiers invaded the south, which was still in ruins and devastated when UCM accepted Chung and he flew from South Korea to the U.S. Mainland via Hawai'i.
When I was a kid, Chung — my father — often told me stories about his college days, when pitchers of beer were 5 cents and he drove a 1957 Chevy, which I saw for myself in an old black-and-white photograph that showed him standing next to his then-brand new car. He worked part-time selling American magazine subscriptions to doctor's offices in the Midwest and did very well.
My father also told me about a specific doctor who kept refusing to buy subscriptions, even though my father kept coming back to him. Eventually, the doctor confessed that he didn't purchase any magazine subscriptions from my father because he had recently lost a son in the Korean War and consequently held my father's nationality against him. My father appreciated the confession and told him his stories of making it through the war. After their conversation, the doctor ordered all the subscriptions from my father and became his best customer.
Chung did a few layovers in Hawai'i going back and forth from Korea and Missouri. He fell in love with the Islands and moved here in 1972. Chung created KBFD TV in Hawai'i, the first Korean-language station in the United States, and shortly after created TAN, The Asia Network, the first satellite service to provide Korean programming on the Mainland. KBFD was the first to translate and add English subtitles to Korean programming and quickly became the supplier to many Korean stations and networks. KBFD is the only Korean-language station that has taken ethnic programming mainstream, where the majority of viewers are non-Korean.
