Ejections, high emotion, extra innings the baseball game last night between Maryknoll and Waipahu had it all.
In the end, Matthew Guzman's deep drive to right-center scored Craig Shoji with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth as Maryknoll beat Waipahu, 6-5, in the quarterfinals of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division II State Baseball Championships at Hans L'Orange Park.
"I'm very proud of the kids," said Maryknoll coach Kevin Uyehara, whose team trailed 5-2 in the fifth. "We had to battle back, and coming from behind like that, they should be proud."
How the teams arrived at the outcome is worth of note.
In the top of the seventh with the score tied 5-5, Waipahu had the bases loaded and one out, but a bang-bang double play, which included a collision at the plate, ended the inning.
The Marauders' Jonathan Casamina lined a pitch to center fielder Shoji, and Ignatius Mackenzie retreated to the third base bag and headed to the plate.
Shoji's throw got to catcher David Nishiki just as Mackenzie arrived. There was a collision, but Nishiki applied the tag and held on to complete the inning-ending double play.
As the players got up, Nishiki shoved Mackenzie, and players and coaches from both teams approached home plate.
Nishiki and Mackenzie were ejected.
"Emotions get into play and guys are wanting to win, so stuff like that is going to happen," Uyehara said.
In the top of the eighth, Waipahu's third-base coach got ejected for arguing.
