WAIPI'O — For a water polo team that may not look "pretty fast," the Kamehameha girls pulled away quickly.
Kamehameha scored six first-half goals and held third-seeded Lahainaluna scoreless for the entire first half en route to an 11-4 win in yesterday's quarterfinals of the Local Motion/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association State Championships at the Veterans' Memorial Aquatic Center.
Nanea Fujiyama scored four goals for the Warriors (6-5), who advance to play No. 2 Roosevelt (15-0) in today's 7 p.m. semifinal.
Kahuku (14-2) faces top-seeded and defending champion Punahou (9-0) in the 5 p.m. semifinal.
"We did awesome, we started out with a bang and gave them jitters a little bit," said Kamehameha senior Ashlee-Aulani Akeo, who scored two goals. "Our defense, we have a really fast team. It shocks a lot of teams because we don't look like we're pretty fast, but we are."
Fujiyama and Akeo scored in the first quarter for a 2-0 lead, and the Warriors scored four times in the second for a 6-0 halftime lead. Kamehameha goalkeeper Chloe Shaw-Limary had six of her nine saves in the first half.
The Lunas broke through 26 seconds into the third quarter on Hailey Gill's lob shot with 6:34 remaining. Gill scored again three minutes later and Moana Tuipulotu scored with 1:24 left to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Fujiyama scored to close out the third, but the Lunas cut it to 7-4 on Tuipulotu's goal with 5:57 left.
Fujiyama then scored back-to-back goals to extend the Warriors' lead to 9-4.
"We slacked off in the third quarter, but we rearranged things and got back on course," Shaw-Limary said.
Kehau Ai had three goals and Kiley Doane added two in the win.
