The state judo championships ran the gamut from a four-time individual champion to a first-time team winner.

Farrington senior Taylor Ibera won her fourth straight championship, becoming just the third judoka overall to accomplish the feat, at the HHSAA state boys and girls judo championships yesterday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Punahou girls won the team title for the first time in the tournament's eighth year, joining the Buffanblu boys as team champions.

The Buffanblu girls scored 91 points, followed by Pearl City with 58 and McKinley with 38. On the boys side, Punahou scored 72 points, followed closely behind by Moanalua with 65 and Roosevelt with 49.

The Punahou girls had four individual champions: Chrissy Chow (115 pounds), Mindy Chow (122), J.T. Ojerio (154) and Kaimana Lundquist (172). Four other girls also placed in the top six, meaning the Buffanblu scored points in eight of 10 weight classes.

"We added a great freshman class, with two golds and a silver," coach Gregory Chow said. "To put in four freshmen and have all of them score, that was huge."

Mindy Chow, the coaches' daughter, is one of those freshmen.

"It feels great; we're making history," she said. "It takes everybody and every match is important. It shows when people on the backside come back and help out the team."

Her older sister, Chrissy, defended her title at 115 pounds.

The boys, who tied with Pearl City last year and also won in 2006, had a harder road with two individual champions in Jordan Ng (108) and Reid Oshiro (132).

"It was great, because we weren't really favored to win," Oshiro said. "We graduated a special class of seniors last year and to win it this year was really great for us."

Four other Buffanblu boys scored top-six finishes.

"I expected the girls to do really well, but I wasn't expecting the boys to do as well at the start of the season," coach Chow said. "But as we got closer, I knew we had a chance."

Individually, Ibera, won her fourth straight title at 98 pounds, completing her career undefeated. She joins Pearl City's Christian Pavo and McKinley's Lianne Tomishima as the only other judoka to do so.

She defeated McKinley's Tryslynn Nakamoto by Ippon in 2:04.

"It feels like an accomplishment," Ibera said. "I knew I had a chance, but I never really thought about it; I just kept playing.

"I try not to let other people's expectations get me down. I try to set my own expectations."

Moanalua junior Brady Lafortune and Hawai'i Baptist senior Risha Mishima each won their third titles.

Lafortune, who competed at 121 pounds, defeated Punahou's Darren Leiman by Ippon in 4:02, despite tweaking his back midway through.

"I went to a throw and it was super sore; I couldn't move," Lafortune said. "(The trainers) were feeling to see if I broke it. My coach said to suck it up.

"When I started to play, it started hurting and I had to overcome it and get my third title."

Lafortune won at 114 in 2008 and 108 in 2007.

Mishima won her third straight title by beating Stephanie Soon of Castle by Ippon in 2:02. Mishima competed at 129 this season after winning at 139 in 2008. She won at 129 in 2007.

"I went up because I wanted to eat," Mishima said of moving up last year. "I was at 131, 132, after wrestling season.

"(This year) my sister (Kayla) claimed the 139 and I had to drop down and give her some space."

She finds 129 more comfortable because "it's not as heavy and that weight is due to muscle, so they are still strong, but not as strong (as 139)."

Other repeat champions were McKinley's Brittany Balanay at 109 pounds and David Terao of Mid-Pacific Institute at 114 pounds (he won at 108 in 2008).
