A report prepared for Kaua'i County says Kaloko dam should continue to be used to irrigate farms on Kaua'i's north shore.

Kaloko dam collapsed in March 2006, unleashing a flood of water that killed seven people.The dam break also shrunk Kaloko reservoir's water storage capacity by almost 90 percent.

Nearby farmers who rely on irrigation water from Kaloko asked the county to study whether the dam would continue to provide them with water.

The report, issued last month by O'ahu-based Sustainable Resources Group International Inc., says the existing irrigation system has legal, regulatory, and mechanical deficiencies.

But it says these problems can be overcome and using Kaloko is the most feasible way to provide irrigation water to the area.
