WASHINGTON — The PGA Tour estimates its donations to charity will drop by 10 to 14 percent this year, the result of an economic downturn that is affecting everything from sponsors to hospitality sales.
Commissioner Tim Finchem said Wednesday he feels it “would be a victory” if the decline isn’t any greater. He also cautioned that it was too early to give a firm number because the tour isn’t halfway through its schedule.
PGA Tour events are structured as nonprofit organizations that donate proceeds to local charities. Finchem said the tour last year raised $124 million for charity.
Overall, Finchem is optimistic the tour will weather the meltdown in good financial shape.
