Dr. Edwin Cadman, former dean of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's John A. Burns School of Medicine, is retiring, UH announced yesterday.

Cadman plans to retire after Oct. 31.

Cadman moved from Yale University to become dean of the UH medical school in 1999. He stepped down as dean in 2005 but continued as a faculty member.

"The University of Hawai'i and our entire state owes Dr. Cadman a deep debt of gratitude for his outstanding service, and we wish him well," UH President David McClain said in a statement.

UH-Manoa Chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw said, "Our UH medical school's Kaka'ako campus was built as a direct result of Ed Cadman's energy, passion and vision.

"Thanks to him, the medical school's class of 2009 is graduating this month after studying for the past four years in one of the most modern medical schools in the country."
