PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies' two-out rally tied the game. The Dodgers' two-out burst won it.

All those late-game runs gnarled Joe Torre's nerves, but the Dodgers manager at least got to celebrate a win.

Russell Martin hit a tiebreaking double in the 10th inning and Matt Kemp followed with an RBI double to lift Los Angeles over Philadelphia, 5-3, yesterday.

"My stomach is not good," Torre said. "To digest it all and to be able to do this, tells you something about our team."

Chad Durbin (1-1) retired the first two batters, then walked Andre Ethier. Martin doubled for a 4-3 lead and after an intentional walk, Kemp delivered.

The Dodgers, minus the suspended Manny Ramirez, won two of three in a rematch of the NL championship series.

Jonathan Broxton (4-0) earned the win despite blowing a two-run lead with two outs in the ninth. Ramon Troncoso pitched a scoreless 10th for his second save, striking out Ryan Howard with a runner on to end it.

"We're not playing good," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "We don't look good."

The Phillies briefly looked good when they wrecked a strong outing from Chad Billingsley with a two-out, two-run rally in the ninth against Broxton that made it 3-all.

ASTROS 5, ROCKIES 3

Wandy Rodriguez (4-3) gave up three runs and five hits with a career-high 11 strikeouts in seven innings, and Michael Bourn stole home on the tail end of a double steal with Carlos Lee swiping second, leading visiting Houston over Colorado.

CUBS 11, PADRES 3

Bobby Scales drove in four runs with two doubles and Ryan Dempster (3-2) allowed two runs and three hits over seven innings, and also drove in two runs as host Chicago took advantage of 10 walks to hand San Diego its 11th straight loss on the road.

BREWERS 5, MARLINS 3

Prince Fielder hit a solo home run off reliever Burke Badenhop (2-2) to break a 3-all tie in the bottom of the fifth inning and Dave Bush (2-0) gave up three runs on six hits in seven innings to help Milwaukee Brewers complete a three-game sweep of Florida.

CARDINALS 5, PIRATES 1

Colby Rasmus' two-run homer in the second inning helped visiting St. Louis avoid being swept by last-place Pittsburgh, which had beaten the Cardinals five consecutive time in PNC Park.

METS 7, GIANTS 4

David Wright, who had four of his team's franchise-record seven stolen bases, hit a tiebreaking RBI single and Ramon Castros capped the three-run top of the ninth outburst with a two-run single as New York beat San Francisco.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

TWINS 6, TIGERS 5

Joe Crede blooped a two-run, bases-loaded single with two out in a five-run bottom of the seventh inning, lifting Minnesota over Detroit. Tigers catcher Dane Sardinha, a Kamehameha alum, left the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with an injured right hand, that manager Jim Leyland said would be fine.

ANGELS 5, RED SOX 4

Jeff Mathis hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning to break a 4-all tie, and Torii Hunter contributed a two-run double and an RBI triple as Los Angeles beat Boston and struggling David Ortiz, who went 0 for 7 with three strikeouts and stranded 12 runners.

YANKEES 3, BLUE JAYS 2

Back from nagging injuries, Derek Jeter tied the score with an RBI single in the seventh inning and Hideki Matsui put visiting New York ahead with a solo homer in the eighth to help CC Sabathia (3-3) beat Toronto and win consecutive starts for the first time this season.

INDIANS 11, RAYS 7

Victor Martinez had four hits and drove in four runs, raising his batting average to .400 and Shin-Soo Choo and Asdrubal Cabrera also had four hits apiece to help visiting Cleveland outslug Tampa Bay, which trailed 9-0 in the sixth.

RANGERS 3, MARINERS 2

Hank Blalock led off the bottom of the ninth against closer Brandon Morrow (0-3) with a home run, and after David Murphy's one-out double, Chris Davis homered to center to lift AL West-leading Texas over Seattle for its 10th win in 12 games.

ORIOLES 9, ROYALS 5

Cesar Izturis and Nick Markakis each drove in three runs and visiting Baltimore won again in its favorite road ballpark, beating Kansas City for the 15th time in its last 18 games at Kauffman Stadium.

NOTES

Umpire apologizes to Tigers: Paul Schrieber promptly issued an apology yesterday morning for placing his hand on Detroit slugger Magglio Ordonez's back and steering him toward the dugout during a heated confrontation in Wednesday night's game.

"In yesterday's game, after I called Magglio Ordonez out on strikes, I inadvertently placed my hand on his back and ushered him away from home plate so I did not have to eject him for arguing balls and strikes," Schrieber said in a statement. "I should not have placed my hands on him, period. For doing so, I apologize to both Magglio Ordonez and the Detroit Tigers."

Ordonez argued that the called third strike was low. As Schrieber spoke to him, the umpire placed his hand on Ordonez's back and steered him toward the dugout. That's when the hitter and manager responded.

Rangers Francisco nears return: Texas closer Frank Francisco played catch from about 60 feet yesterday, and will have another throwing session before getting back on a mound.

Francisco is still tied for the AL lead with nine saves, even though he hasn't pitched since May 6 because of right biceps tendinitis.
