An anonymous donor has pledged $1.5 million the University of Hawaiçi at Hilo, making the small campus the latest college headed by a woman to receive a generous donation from a mystery source.

Sixteen colleges run by woman have now received at least $83 million from an anonymous donor, or several anonymous donors, since March.
UH-Hilo said Friday that $1 million will go to financial aid and scholarships at the donor’s request. The remaining $500,000 won’t carry any use restrictions.
Hilo Chancellor Rose Tseng said the school is proud to be recognized with a vote of confidence in its ability to transform student lives.
“UH Hilo serves as an economic engine for our state and region, and we will repay this investment many times over as our students graduate and take their place in the professional workforce,” Tseng said in a news release.
The school said it would use the gift to recruit and retain students and remove barriers to student access and achievement.
About 3,500 students are enrolled at the Hilo campus on the east side of the Big Island. Founded in 1941 as Hawaii Vocational School, it became the University of Hawaiçi at Hilo in 1970.
The gift is due to become final after receiving the approval of the University of Hawaiçi Board of Regents at its May 29 meeting.
The University of Alaska Anchorage earlier this month said it received $7 million from an anonymous donor.
Other recipients have included New York’s Hunter College, Michigan State University and Michigan’s Kalamazoo College.
It’s not clear whether the gifts came from an individual, an organization or a group of people with similar interests.
The gifts have come with the same stipulation: Most of the money must be used for student scholarships, and the remainder can be spent on various costs such as research, equipment, strategic goals and operating support.
