Madeline Nemeth enjoyed a horse ride at last year's Special Keiki Rodeo. Today's event in Waimanalo will feature pony and hay rides, a petting zoo, games and more.

There's definitely something special about today's Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawai'i's keiki rodeo.

It's not the type of rodeo filled with heart-stopping stunts, but instead offers an abundance of heartwarming performances as "Very Special Riders" show off what they've accomplished on horseback for parents, friends and members of the public who want to spend some time outdoors at a family-friendly (and animal-friendly) event.

Admission is free, but bring your wallet because the Special Keiki Rodeo is the annual fundraiser for this nonprofit organization, which offers therapeutic riding lessons to children and adults with physical and mental challenges. In addition to the rodeo, there will be pony rides and a hay ride, food and drinks, face painting, kids games, a petting zoo, vendors and a rodeo clown.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Waimanalo Polo Field. For more information, visit www.thhwaimanalo.org or call 259-7107.
