Wie trails Lincicome by six in Sybase

Associated Press

CLIFTON, N.J. — Less than six months ago, Brittany Lincicome had a long sit-down with her parents and talked about the possibility of taking a year off from golf.

"Bam-Bam's" game had gone bad.

With a little more work and a coaching change, things have turned around. Last month, Lincicome won her first major — the Kraft Nabisco Championship — and this week the 23-year-old from Florida is starting to show the consistency that all good players seem to possess.

Lincicome followed an opening-round 64 with a 3-under 69 yesterday to take a two-shot lead over Suzann Pettersen of Norway and Ji Young Oh of South Korea at the LPGA Sybase Classic.

"I really had no expectations today, just to keep it under par," Lincicome said. "I was hitting it good yesterday, when I went to the range this morning, I felt like I was hitting it really well."

Lincicome is at 11-under 133 on the Upper Montclair Country Club. First-round leader Helen Alfredsson, coming off a career-best 62, shot 76 in a round that included a missed tap-in. She was tied for fourth at 6-under with Wendy Doolan, who shot 68.

Hawai'i's Michelle Wie, looking for her first professional win, Hall of Famer Karrie Webb and Paula Creamer all shot 69 and were in a group at 139.

Texas Open: Paul Goydos followed his opening 7-under 63 with a 65 yesterday to reach 12-under 128 on the La Cantera Golf Club course — three strokes ahead of Justin Leonard and four others — after two rounds of the Texas Open at San Antonio.

"It's just kind of like being the pace car, for lack of a better word," said the 44-year-old Goydos, whose last of two PGA Tour victories came at the 2007 Sony Open in Hawai'i.

Castle High grad Dean Wilson (74—141) and Moanalua High senior Tadd Fujikawa (71—143) both missed the cut of 139.

Regions Charity Classic: Dan Forsman fired a 7-under 65 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead over Keith Fergus, Larry Mize and Hal Sutton after the opening round of the Champions Tour event at Hoover, Ala.

Obituary: Bob Rosburg, who won the PGA Championship and spent three decades with ABC Sports as the first reporter to call the shots from the golf course, died Thursday at his home in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 82.
