The Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday placed right-hander Tyler Yates on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Saturday with an inflamed elbow.
Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny, a former 14-game winner who was demoted to the minors, was recalled by Pittsburgh from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Yates, a Kaua'i High and University of Hawai'i-Hilo alum, was one of two Pirates relievers who did not pitch during a rain-delayed 7-4 victory over Colorado Saturday night.
Yates, the club's top right-handed set-up man, was 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in 15 appearances. He's been dealing with right elbow inflammation all season.
"It was just one of those things that it hurt when I threw, but I could get through it," Yates said. "I'm just tired of throwing hurt."
The 26-year-old Gorzelanny was bothered by wildness last season while going 6-9 with a 6.66 ERA, a year after he was 14-10 with a 3.88 ERA for Pittsburgh.
He was sent to the minors in spring training.
"We have the option of somebody who gives us some innings in case something goes wrong," manager John Russell said.

Rockies: Reliever Matt Daley is headed to the disabled list after a fluke accident during a 10-run seventh inning by the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday. Early in the inning, Daley gave up an RBI double to Freddy Sanchez. As the pitcher ran to back up home plate, umpire Bill Welke tossed the bat out of the way to clear space. It landed directly under Daley's left foot on his next stride. "It was just a freak accident," said Daley, who wore a protective boot after the game.
Giants: Juan Uribe was placed on the bereavement list so the infielder could be in his native Dominican Republic to visit his ailing grandfather.
Rays: Placed designated hitter Pat Burrell on the 15-day disabled list with a neck strain.
