NFL: Niners waive DB Jimmy Williams

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have waived defensive back Jimmy Williams just four months after signing the former Virginia Tech star.
Williams was a second-round pick by Atlanta in 2006, but the Falcons waived him last June. He spent last season out of football before the 49ers signed him in January.
San Francisco was interested in Williams as a backup strong safety, but coach Mike Singletary said Monday the club already has ample depth at safety.
The 49ers also signed rookie safety Curtis Taylor to a four-year contract on the first day of organized team activities. Taylor is a seventh-round pick from LSU.
