NFL: Agent: RB Jones will attend Jets camp next week

NEW YORK — Jets Pro Bowl running back Thomas Jones will rejoin his teammates next week after sitting out voluntary team activities while in a contract dispute, according to his agent.

Drew Rosenhaus wrote on his Twitter page Tuesday night that Jones, entering the third year of a four-year, $20 million deal, “will attend the Jets OTA next Wednesday.”
Rosenhaus didn’t offer any further information whether an agreement on a restructured deal is in place, and the agent didn’t immediately answer an e-mail from The Associated Press seeking comment.
Jones made the Pro Bowl last season after leading the AFC with 1,312 yards rushing, but is unhappy with his contract, which was front-loaded with $13.1 million over the first two seasons. He’s scheduled to make only $900,000 in base salary this season.
The Jets are in their second week of organized team activities and have been without both Jones and Pro Bowl running back-kick returner Leon Washington, also sitting out while unhappy with his contract.
Jones has been quiet on his absence, but coach Rex Ryan said last week he expects to have him and Washington in mandatory minicamp, which begins June 9. Jones, 30, has rushed for 1,000 or more yards in four straight seasons, including the last two with the Jets.
After rushing for just one score in his first season with New York, Jones ran for a team-record 13 touchdowns last season. He also caught two touchdown passes.
Washington attended voluntary activities before last week, but hasn’t been at the Jets’ facility since OTAs began last Monday. He’s due to earn $535,000 this season, which is the final year of his rookie deal. Washington is believed to be looking for around $6 million a year, similar to deals Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew and San Diego’s Darren Sproles — players he has often been compared to — have received.
Washington’s agent, Alvin Keels, has reportedly met with the Jets this week, and the sides are still negotiating.
The Jets traded up in the draft and selected Iowa running back Shonn Greene with the first pick of the third round. The bulldozing Greene could provide a solid complement to Jones and Washington, or provide insurance if negotiations go awry with Jones.
