Uribe, Kono help UCLA lead NCAAs

Advertiser Staff

UCLA's Maria Jose Uribe shot a 6-under 66 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead in the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships and help the Bruins open a seven-shot advantage in the team competition.

Uribe, who won the 2007 U.S. Women's Amateur, had a 3-under 141 total on the Caves Valley course in Owings Mills, Md. Wake Forest's Nanette Hill (71), Denver's Stephanie Sherlock (73) and Pepperdine's Lisa McCloskey (69) were at 143. UCLA freshman Stephanie Kono, a Punahou grad, is tied for 16th at 76—149.

Leilehua alum Britney Choy (New Mexico) is tied for 37th at 79—152, and Waiakea grad Amanda Wilson (Arizona) is tied for 48th at 77—153.

"It's a pretty tough course," Uribe said. "If you're not in the fairway, it's going to be tough. If you have a good round, numbers like 66 and 67 are very reachable."

UCLA topped the team standing at 13-over 589. Southern California was second at 596, followed by Denver at 598, and Arizona State, Oklahoma State and North Carolina at 600.
