The signing period for recruits ended yesterday, but the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team is still in search of players.

"We will continue to recruit through the summer," Hawai'i head coach Bob Nash said. "We're now looking at players who can help us in the future."

In particular, Nash said he will target potential transfers from other NCAA Division I programs.

"If we can get a quality transfer, he would have to sit out (the 2009-10 season), but that still gives us a body for the following year," he said. "We have some things in the works already. We just have to wait and see if it can work out."

Three recruits signed with the Rainbow Warriors during the recently completed signing period: 6-foot guards Dwain Williams and Jeremy Lay, and 7-foot center Douglas Kurtz.

Hawai'i still has two scholarships it can fill for the 2009-10 season.

Nash has not ruled out finding another recruit — or two — for the 2009-10 season. Recruits can still sign with UH during the summer, but it would not be a binding letter of intent.

"There might be guys under the radar — guys who maybe are not qualified (academically) now, but might be qualified after summer school," he said. "If we can find a good one, we'll see what we can work out."

For now, Nash said he is prepared to enter the 2009-10 season with his current roster.

"We are satisfied with the group we have right now," Nash said. "We have 11 guys on scholarship, and it's a good group to work with."

Nash said the three recruits were targeted to fill the team's most pressing needs.

"We needed more speed and scoring from our backcourt, and we feel like we got two guys who fill that in Jeremy and Dwain," Nash said. "We also needed to shore up our post defense and we think Douglas will do that. He's 270 (pounds), but he can move up and down the floor."

The 'Bows have eight scholarship players returning from last season's 13-17 team. Among the returnees are starters Roderick Flemings, Bill Amis and Paul Campbell.

The other scholarship returnees are Brandon Adams, Petras Balocka, Hiram Thompson, Adhar Mayen and Ji Xiang.

Walk-on players eligible to return are Beau Albrechtson, Leroy Lutu Jr. and Gary Satterwhite.

"It's a big summer for all those guys," Nash said. "We expect all of them to come back stronger and in good condition."

Hawai'i lost three scholarship players from last season: Kareem Nitoto, Adam Jespersen and Lasha Parghalava. Nash said all three players finished the semester in good academic standing, so their transfers should not hurt Hawai'i's Academic Progress Rate.
