Milk and cookies reward Hawaii student-authors
Eighty-nine students of Holy Trinity School will see for the first time the finished results of their labors, 70 different books they illustrated and wrote, at a free, public milk-and-cookie reception Tuesday, 10 a.m. to noon, at the Chip & Cookie store at Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki.
The students, mostly working individually though the younger ones worked in groups, created the books based on characters "Chip & Cookie," created by Christine Harris-Amos, a teacher at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Academy Art Center at Linekona. Chip & Cookie is the brand name and symbol of the chocolate chip cookie stores operated by Harris-Amos' husband, Wally "Famous" Amos, himself author of eight books and board member of Read to Me International and co-founder of Read It LOUD, a national foundation that promotes reading to children at least 10 minutes a day. The Chip and Cookie characters also encourage children to read and enjoy it.
In telling their stories, in which the two C's encounter different adventures, the Trinity students used materials that ranges from pen and paper to computer programs. The manuscripts were then were bound, printed and published by Studentreatures, a national organization.
Project coordinators included language arts teacher-author Shelly Mecum (best-selling author of "God's Photo Album," which also involved Trinity students), English teacher Christine Matsukawa, computer teacher Sister John Joseph and others.
