MLB: Papelbon, Red Sox hang on for 6-5 win over Twins

By DAVE CAMPBELL
AP Sports Writer

MINNEAPOLIS — Jason Bay and Kevin Youkilis hit two-run doubles, and the Boston Red Sox started a 10-game road trip with a 6-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday.

Jonathan Papelbon survived a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth by pinch-hitter Joe Mauer to get his 12th save.
Michael Cuddyer homered early for Minnesota, but Brad Penny (5-1) pitched into the sixth for his third straight victory.
Francisco Liriano (2-6) struck out seven in four innings for the Twins, including three straight to finish the second after the Red Sox put runners on second and third. But he was done in, again, by the big inning after the White Sox hit him with a seven-run fourth last week in Chicago.
Jacoby Ellsbury stretched his hitting streak to 20 games with a slow roller over the mound in the third that Liriano wasn’t in position to field, trying to stick his glove between his legs as the ball rolled toward second base.
Boston was quickly in control after that.
Manager Terry Francona left slumping designated hitter David Ortiz on the bench to stock the lineup with right-handers; Ellsbury was the only lefty. The Red Sox got 15 hits from the first six batters in the order plus a late home run by Jeff Bailey.
Boston had no trouble getting their swings around on Liriano’s pitches. Seven of their 11 hits off the left-hander were pulled to left field. Several of those zipped by third baseman Brian Buscher, who subbed for Joe Crede.
Mike Lowell, who had four hits, capped the three-run third off Liriano with an RBI single.
With a quick turnaround from Sunday night’s win over Milwaukee, Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire rested Crede and Mauer — leaving a lineup of, well, mostly ordinary Joes.
After outscoring their opponents 43-9 over the previous four games, the Twins — who lost for just the second time in their last 10 home games — put more than one man on base in only one inning.
Justin Morneau hit an RBI double and Jason Kubel followed with a run-scoring single to send Penny off and cut the lead to 5-3 with one out in the sixth. But Ramon Ramirez relieved and retired five straight batters.
Penny gave up six hits and struck out seven without a walk. He twice ended an inning with a runner on second, including a strikeout of Cuddyer on a low-and-away fastball in the fourth.
Notes: Boston’s John Smoltz is scheduled for his second rehab start on Tuesday, this time for Double-A Portland. Francona said Smoltz would probably throw three innings, perhaps 50 pitches. The 42-year-old Smoltz, in line to make his Red Sox debut next month, is recovering from right shoulder surgery. ... The Twins have homered in eight straight games and have 36 this month, the second-most in the majors. ... Red Sox SS Jed Lowrie, who had surgery on his left wrist five weeks ago, swung off a tee for the first time, slightly ahead of schedule. “He’s doing really well,” Francona said. ... Twins CF Carlos Gomez crushed a pitch from Penny for a double to start the sixth, but he made a lot more contact than that. Gomez took a possible home run from Jason Varitek with a jumping, back-against-the-wall catch to end the top of the third inning. Then he sprawled forward to make a sliding grab of Dustin Pedroia’s line drive in the sixth. And before the game, Gomez needed two stitches to close a cut on his forehead when he banged it on a revolving door on his way into the stadium.
