FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins on Tuesday extended the contract of Will Allen, one of the team’s starting cornerbacks the past three seasons.
According to Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for the eight-year veteran, Allen and the Dolphins have agreed to a two-year extension worth $16.2 million over the next three seasons.
The contract includes $10 million in guaranteed money and ensures that one of the team’s most underrated defenders will be on board to mentor rookie cornerbacks Vontae Davis and Sean Smith.
“We’re happy to get a deal done that makes sense for both sides,” Rosenhaus said. “Will is excited because he was going into a free-agent year, but wanted to remain a Miami Dolphin. Now he’ll remain with a franchise we feel is going places.”
Last year Allen, who turns 31 in August, had one of his most productive seasons. He had 50 tackles, three interceptions (one for a touchdown), a sack and a forced fumble.
Based on the four-year contract he signed in 2006, Allen was slated to make $3 million in base salary, and had $1.25 million tied to bonuses.
Allen isn’t the only returning veteran pursuing an extension. Rosenhaus has had contract discussions with the team regarding outside linebacker Matt Roth.
