Hearing to be held in American Samoa on pre-tsunami preparedness

Associated Press

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa — A lawmaker in American Samoa plans to hold a hearing to look into preparedness in the U.S. territory before the deadly Sept. 29 tsunami.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Maugaoali’i S. Anoai says the seriousness of the recent disaster warrants an investigation.
He says the committee could schedule a hearing for mid-November.
Much of the concern in the House has centered on community preparedness and an ineffective emergency alarm system.
The tsunami generated by a magnitude-8.3 earthquake killed 34 people in American Samoa, 183 in Samoa and nine in Tonga.
