Surfrider activists from around the state, surfing legends and younger pros will gather at the 7th Annual John Kelly Environmental Awards on Saturday at Waimea Valley to honor Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, artist Bill Braden and filmmakers Keith, Chris and Dan Malloy.

Former award-winners and legendary surfers Peter Cole and Randy Rarick and younger pros from the World Tour are expected to attend. The event includes dinner and live music from Micah Wolf and Johnny Helm. Tickets are $40 in advance at the Quiksilver/Roxy store, 1714 Kapiolani Blvd., Hawaiian Island Creations in Ala Moana Center or Kailua, or Patagonia in Haleiwa; $50 at the door. CONSERVE WATER BY CAPTURING RAIN

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply is hosting a rain barrel catchment workshop at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The workshop will teach participants how to conserve water by capturing rainwater to irrigate gardens. The cost is $35 and includes a lecture and one fully constructed 55-gallon rain barrel. Those who don't want the barrel can attend the lecture for $5.
