University of Hawai'i-Mänoa freshman Julianne Chu, 18, has won the title of 2010 Miss Hawai'i Teen USA.

Chu, who was crowned yesterday afternoon at Level4 in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, is the daughter of Tina and Benjamin Chu.

A 2009 graduate of Kalani High School, Chu said she hopes to become a doctor, probably a pediatrician, because she loves children.

Chu and her family live in Kähala. Her hobbies include singing, hanging out with friends, spending time with her family, surfing, going to the beach and hiking.

Fourteen contestants competed in the 2010 Miss Hawai'i Teen USA pageant. They were judged in an interview as well as swimsuit and evening gown phases.

Chu won the evening gown competition and tied with finalist Courtney Coleman for best in swimsuit.

The three other top finalists were Brittany Browning, Cassie Ann Sumimoto and Brianna Acosta.

The pageant is the official preliminary to the Miss Teen USA pageant. The 2010 Miss Hawai'i USA pageant will be at 7 tonight at Level4.

FOOD NETWORK STAR RALLIES FOR OHIO TOWN

WILMINGTON, Ohio — Television cooking star Rachael Ray is boosting the local food supply for a struggling Ohio town.

On Saturday, Ray brought a Wilmington soup kitchen new appliances, shelves and furniture. Ray's show also promised to supply food for the kitchen for the next year.

The soup kitchen is getting as many customers in a day as it did in a week a year ago.

Wilmington is still reeling from the departure of DHL Express and other Wilmington Air Park operations, leaving a 15 percent local unemployment rate in its wake.

Yesterday, the Food Network star hosted an early Thanksgiving feast for the community. The soup kitchen improvements and the Thanksgiving meal are scheduled to be featured on "The Rachael Ray Show" on Nov. 25.

'CHRISTMAS CAROL' RAKES IN $31 MILLION

LOS ANGELES — Jim Carrey's Scrooge collected holiday donations from movie fans with his new take on "A Christmas Carol," which took in $31 million to open as the weekend's top movie.

The animated version of the Charles Dickens classic knocked the King of Pop out of the No. 1 spot as "Michael Jackson's This Is It" slipped to second place with $14 million, according to studio estimates. "This Is It," presenting rehearsals Jackson shot before his death in June, raised its domestic total to $57.9 million. Worldwide, "This Is It" has taken in $186.5 million.

The acclaimed drama "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" had a spectacular start, pulling in $1.8 million in just 18 theaters, averaging $100,000 a cinema. That compares with an $8,418 average for "A Christmas Carol" in 3,683 theaters.

George Clooney's comedy, "The Men Who Stare at Goats," finished at No. 3 with $13.3 million.
