Planned increases in state park and boating fees are being opposed by many Hawaii residents who have spoken at public hearings held across the Islands.

The money would be used to repair and maintain Hawaii's aging outdoor recreational facilities, but residents and some businesses are complaining about new tourist entry fees and boat mooring rate increases. The final public hearing is scheduled for 6 tonight at Jefferson Elementary School cafeteria, 324 Kapahulu Ave., Honolulu.

Boat owners say they're worried their mooring fees will make owning their vessels unaffordable.

Others were more concerned about a proposed $1 walk-in entry fee that would be imposed on tourists at eight state parks. Residents would be exempt, but tour companies are against the measure.

A $5-per-car tourist entrance fee at those eight parks already has been imposed by the state Board of Land and Natural Resources.
