DETROIT — Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson said he and quarterback Matthew Stafford are not at odds after television replays from Sunday’s frustrating 32-20 loss at Seattle caught the two players having a chilly exchange.
“There’s no problem with us,” Johnson said Monday. “People are just blowing that out of proportion.”
TV replays from Fox’s broadcast showed Stafford addressing Johnson on the bench and Johnson appeared to have little interest in the discussion. Asked if he had seen the TV replay, Johnson said he didn’t need to.
“I don’t care to see it,” Johnson said. “I know there’s nothing. I was there. So it’s no problem.”
Stafford and Johnson, who both had been fighting knee injuries, played together for the first time in a month and they seemed out of sync. Johnson caught only two balls for 27 yards despite being targeted nine times.
Stafford was not available for comment.
Lions coach Jim Schwartz downplayed the TV moment and said it was taken out of context.
“I’ve talked to the players,” Schwartz said. “I haven’t looked at TV copies or anything else. Good gracious, if there was a camera on every single person on every single play you could read between the lines on a million different things.
“How many times does Dominic (Raiola) scream something at (a reporter) on the practice field or something like that? If that gets taken out of context, somebody might get a different perspective on that. “
With the Lions blowing a 17-0 lead at Seattle, losing their 16th straight on the road and having won only eight games halfway into his third season, Johnson admitted mounting frustration.
“It’s been awhile now — yeah, definitely,” he said. “Since I’ve been here (we) haven’t gotten enough wins, you know? It’s definitely frustration.”
