UHH funding released for campus construction, fixes
The University of Hawai'i at Hilo has recently received state funding to expand one building, plan for another and to pay for various deferred maintenance, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported.
It's all part of the more than $200 million Gov. Linda Lingle released during the last quarter for renovations and new construction at University of Hawai'i campuses statewide.
The money includes $27.5 million to design and build a renovation and addition to the UHH Student Services Building.
Constructed more than 25 years ago, the two-story building was originally designed as an administration building, but those services were then moved to accommodate expanding student enrollment.
"Continued growth of student services has led to overcrowding in the building, including hallways being used for work areas, files and storage," according to a statement from Lingle's office.
Construction is expected to be finished in July 2011.
Lingle released another $1 million for the continued design of a College of Hawaiian Language Building. The project is intended to consolidate operations now located in several buildings on the UHH campus.
Another $107 million has gone toward system-wide repairs. UHH will get air conditioning upgrades, new roofs, parking repairs and repaving, fire protection and building modernization, according to Lingle's office.
