7 taken to hospital after gas odor reported in Waipahu
Firefighters have converged on various areas in Waipahu this morning trying to find what led to multiple calls about a gas odor and seven people were taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Capt. Terry Seelig, spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department, said calls began coming in about 11:15 a.m., first from homes on Pupumomi Street, then from Honowai Elementary School and finally from Waipahu Intermediate School.
“The calls came in sequentially within 15 to 20 minutes of one another,” Seelig said.
As of 12:15 p.m. crews were still in the area monitoring the situation.
“We have not determined yet what it was or where it came from,” Seelig said.
Those who called the Fire Department reported a smell similar to propane.
EMS units transported 7 patients from Waipahu Intermediate School to a local-area hospital in stable condition, said Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic. The patients complained of nausea and dizziness and some complained of lightheadedness.
Two of the seven patients were children under the age of 13 and five were adults.
On Pupumomi Street, one person was treated and released at the scene, Cheplic said.
Seelig, who was in the area, said the smell was no longer noticeable as of 12:15 p.m.
“We believe it was probably a transient release of some sort,” Seelig said.
Federal firefighters and representatives from The Gas Company were in the area assisting in the effort to determine where the gas came from.
Seelig said students at Honowai Elementary School “were sheltered in place” after the incident was reported while Waipahu Intermediate students were evacuated to the school’s recreation field where they were sitting on bleachers in the shade.
All of the fire units were released from the area about 12:25 p.m.
