Yamashita sets 4 world lift records

Advertiser Staff

Ren Yamashita, a 2006 'Aiea High graduate, shattered four world records yesterday at the World Power Lifting World Championships in Las Vegas.

Yamashita, competing at 114 pounds, set her first record in the squat, at 319 pounds. She followed that with a lift of 192 pounds in bench press. She finished with a lift of 314 pounds in dead lift. Her combined total of 826 pounds is also a record.

Yamashita was named Outstanding Female Lifter at the event. The award is based on the number of pounds you lift over your body weight.

Yamashita, who wrestled in high school, took up competitive lifting in the last year. Her sister Joy is an 'Aiea senior. Joy won a state wrestling championship last season and learned last week that she is ranked No. 2 nationally at 124 pounds by USA Wrestling Magazine.

VERCRUYSSEN LIFTS U.S. INTO FINALS

Roosevelt High School senior Nani Vercruyssen finished in 16th place and led the U.S. team to tonight's finals of the World Trampoline Gymnastics Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Vercruyssen, 17, scored 29.7 on her compulsory routine, well above her personal best of 28.2, and followed with a 35.5 (her best is 36.6) in the optional. Hypothetically, Vercruyssen's 16th overall finish would have earned her a berth in the 2012 Olympics had this competition been held in 2011.

Only the top eight in a field composed mainly of 20- to 40-year-old athletes advanced to tonight's individual finals.

Vercruyssen and teammates Haley Butcher, who finished 15th overall, and Alaina Williams (31st) helped the U.S. score 193.1 points and earn one of five spots in the team finals. Because the U.S. only entered three gymnasts, all of their scores counted in the team total. In preliminary competition, each country is allowed a maximum of four gymnasts with the top three scores counting.

The other countries advancing to the team finals were China (209.3), Canada (200.2), Russia (200.0) and Belarus (196.7).

WEBER IS LONE WINNER FOR UH

Senior Andreas Weber won the only match for the University of Hawai'i against Brigham Young University in the Hawai'i Invitational yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.

Weber, ranked No. 119 in the ITA preseason rankings, beat Evan Urbina, 6-3, 7-6.

The Cougars won the other seven singles matches and all four doubles matches.

UH junior Dennis Lajola, ranked No. 43, sat out of competition for the second straight day.

The three-day event concludes today, starting at 3 p.m.

HPU MEN RANKED NO. 5 IN THE WEST

Hawai'i Pacific's men's team is ranked first in the West Region in the first ITA Division II poll of the 2009-10 season. The Sea Warriors are ranked fifth nationally.

In addition to the team ranking, Nikola Petrov (No. 2), Daniel Luedi (No. 3), Anton Samuilau (No. 6), and Sebastian Bader (No. 8) earned regional Top-10 rankings in singles, with Luedi and Petrov No. 2 in West Region doubles and No. 12 nationally.

The Sea Warriors finished third at last season's NCAA DII National Championship. They defeated Drury University to advance to the national semifinals before falling to top-ranked and eventual national champion Armstrong Atlantic State.
