LAIE — Waika Carvalho, Kahuku High School's former star quarterback, was killed last night in a single-truck crash in Laie that injured four other young men.
Carvalho, 23, of Hauula, led the 2003 Red Raiders to an undefeated 14-0 record and the O’ahu Interscholastic Association Championship and state title. He is the nephew of Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho.
He was the front-seat passenger in the crash, which occurred in the south-bound lanes of Kamehameha Highway at Naniloa Loop at 10:48 p.m.
The Toyota pick-up truck lost control and hit a bridge guard rail, Honolulu police traffic investigators said.
Police opened a negligent homicide investigation and said alcohol and speed may be involved.
The Carvalho family, meanwhile, said they were overwhelmed "by the outpouring of love and compassion from relatives, friends, neighbors and the community," said Thomas Adolpho, Waika Carlvalho's uncle. "We have felt their support through their visits, food and offerings to help our family."
Services are scheduled for Saturday at the Church of Latter-day Saints on Kamehameha Highway in Hauçula. Viewing will be at 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., services from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Hauçula Cemetary. A luncheon will follow at Hauula Beach Park.
Police said the 19-year-old driver was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition and that two 18-year-old passengers were taken to Queen's in critical condition. A juvenile passenger was taken to Queen's in serious condition, police said.
Emergency Medical Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said a man in his 20s was dead at the scene at 11:51 p.m. and that four other young males, all of them teenagers were taken to a hospital, one in critical condition and the other three in serious condition.
Carvalho was identified by the Honolulu Medical Examiners Office.
Kamehameha Highway was closed for hours while police investigated the accident.
It was not known if the passengers were wearing seat belts.
Carvalho played basketball and football for Kahuku and was named to the O’ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division All-Star team in 2003 as a 6-foot, 1-inch, 180-pound quarterback.
In August, 2003, Carvalho played a role in four of Kahuku’s six scores in the season-opening, 36-0 victory over Waianae before 3,143 fans at Aloha Stadium.
In 2004, he was named honorable mention to the O’ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division All-Star basketball team.
As a senior, Carvalho signed a letter of intent to attend Dixie College, a community college in Utah.
