RAINBOW WAHINE SIGN FIVE PLAYERS

The University of Hawai'i softball team has signed five players, including Campbell High School's Gerika Pantohan, for the 2011 season.

Pantohan plays second, third and catcher for the Sabers, the Hawai'i Gold and Guava Jam club teams. Pantohan, who has earned all-state honors the past three seasons, batted .405 in the leadoff spot for Campbell last season.

"Gerika is a quiet but dynamic player who swings a good bat and (has) solid knowledge of the game," UH head coach Bob Coolen said. "She can play anywhere in the infield and will be an asset to our program."

Also signing letters of intent with the Rainbow Wahine were:

• Sharla Kliebenstein, a left-handed catcher who also plays first base and outfield for El Camino (Calif.) High School. She batted .349 to help El Camino go 23-5 last season, and batted .467 with the San Diego Legacy club team.

• Mala Lemay, a 6-foot-1, right-handed pitcher for Escondido (Calif.) High School who has a 26-11 three-year record and had a 1.54 ERA last season. She is a teammate of Kliebenstein on the Legacy team that finished 9th out of 144 teams at the 18-under "A" nationals this past summer.

• Kaile Nakao, a utility infielder for Santa Monica (Calif.) High School. She was voted the Ocean League's Most Outstanding Player as a freshman and has been a first-team all-league player for the past two seasons. She batted .433 last season.

• Jazmine Zamora, a utility infielder for Great Oak (Calif.) High School. She is a three-time all-league selection who played second base and shortstop last season when she batted .346.

"Together, this 2011 class fills our future needs with athleticism and versatility," Coolen said. "They are all solid players who have the potential to play big roles for us. With these additions to our current squad, we also may have the fastest team on the bases in recent history, which opens up another weapon for us on offense."
