Amateurs to defend Burns Cup title

The Gov. John A. Burns Challenge Cup — Hawai'i's version of the Ryder Cup — will be Monday and Tuesday at Mid-Pacific Country Club.
A professional team led by captain Ron Castillo Jr. will take on 12 amateurs, including 'Iolani sophomore Lorens Chan, Brandan Kop, TJ Kua, Ryan Perez and Punahou senior Bradley Shigezawa.
Castillo's team includes Andrew Feldmann, John Hearn, John Lynch, Regan Lee and Travis Toyama.
The 12-man teams are selected on performances at designated tournaments during the year. The opening day will feature two team matches — Best Ball and Scotch Foursome. There will be 12 singles matches Tuesday.
The Amateurs won their 12th Cup last year by one point. This is the 37th Cup.
Golfers tee off at 7 a.m. each day.
PEREZ IS AMATOUR'S PLAYER OF THE YEAR
With three wins, including the Amatour Championship at Kapolei, former University of Hawai'i golfer Ryan Perez captured 2009 Player of the Year honors.
Perez finished with 1,660 points, overtaking Mike Kawate (1,292.5) in the final week. Perez also won this year's Coral Creek Classic and Battle at Klipper.
Jared Sawada (1,242.5), two-time Player of the Year Eric Sonnenberg (1,197.5) and Craig Watanabe (1,077) rounded out the top five.
Perez shot 66-67 at Kapolei to win by eight shots, at 11-under-par 133. Sonnenberg (70—141) was second. Perez, the 2004 Mänoa Cup champion, is planning to turn pro soon.
ARI TAKES MAKALEI AMATEUR TITLE
Brishara Ari's brilliant opening round held up through a tougher final round as he won the fourth annual Makalei Amateur Championship Sunday at Makalei Golf Club.
Ari opened with a 3-under-par 69 Saturday to take a five-shot advantage into the final round. He fired 77 Sunday to beat Aaron Kunitomo by three shots. Kunitomo rallied from an opening round 81 to shoot 68 in the final round.
Aisea Tuikolovtu (72), Nick Matsushima (74) and Shaun Downie (76) tied for third at 150.
The flight winners were Steve Stock (A) at 82—161, 18-handicapper Randy Arase (B) at net 140, and Randi Wilson (Ladies), a 22-handicapper, at net 147.
BIG ISLAND TOURNEY RAISES $10,000
The Big Island's Clever Construction raised approximately $10,000 for Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii at Saturday's Clever Construction Invitational Golf Tournament on Mauna Kea Golf Course.
Clever also announced at the tournament that it is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to deliver a new home for a local family in need next year. The company has issued a call for assistance, especially from those in real estate and architecture, to help locate and acquire residential property and design and build a home at no cost for a low-income family on the Big Island.
