Unattended cooking to blame for Punchbowl fire
Fire investigators have determined that unattended cooking is to blame for a Saturday fire that left a family of five without a home, authorities said.
The fire at 1475 Punchbowl St. was deemed accidental, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Robert Main. No one was injured in the fire.
Eight fire units responded to the blaze that gutted a one-story home at 5:45 p.m. Saturday. The fire was extinguished in about an hour and investigators returned today to comb through the building to determine the cause.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family. Damages are estimated at $400,000 for the structure and about $25,000 for the contents.
