Missing kayaker off Haleiwa Beach Park identified
The Honolulu Fire Department and the Coast Guard continue to search for a missing kayaker off Haleiwa Beach Park. Authorities identified the man as Russell Yoshida of Waialua.
The 53-year-old man was reported an hour-and-a-half overdue last night, said Capt. Terry Seelig.
About 45 minutes after the search began, between 8 and 8:30 p.m., a paddle identified as belonging to the missing kayaker was recovered.
Today the fire department rescue boat and water craft have been launched and firefighters are combing the beach and are out on surfboards searching the area.
Police are investigating as well, Seelig said.
Yoshida, reported as an experienced water person, had gone out in the kayak to fish and was due back at 6 p.m., he said.
