Matson to raise base shipping rate by average 3.8% in January
Hawai'i consumers can expect to pay more for goods coming in on Matson Navigation Co. ships starting in January.
The state's largest shipper said today it will increase rates on Jan. 3 by $120 per west-bound container and $60 per east-bound container. That's an average rate increase of 3.8 percent, the company said.
The increase compares with annual hikes of 3.9 percent in 2009, 2.5 percent in 2008 and 3.3 percent in 2007.
In addition, Matson said it will raise its terminal handling charge by $125 per west-bound container and $60 per east-bound container.
