Dolphins sign Alama-Francis, release LB Matt Roth

Associated Press

DAVIE, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins signed former Hawaii defensive end Ikaika Alama-Francis today and released linebacker Matt Roth, a move that came a week after coach Tony Sparano lauded his work off the bench.

The Dolphins also signed cornerback Evan Oglesby. Defensive tackle Jason Ferguson was placed on injured reserve with a season-ending leg injury, and safety Nate Ness was released.
Ferguson was injured in last week’s win over Carolina.
Roth, a second-round draft pick in 2005, missed training camp with a groin injury was placed on the team’s on the reserve-non football injury list. He was activated from the list on Oct. 31 and has compiled four tackles in Miami’s last four games. Still, Sparano said Roth was “really impressive” in a 25-23 win over Tampa Bay on Nov. 15.
Roth, 27, had his best season last year, when he moved from end to linebacker and started 14 games. He since lost his starting role to Jason Taylor. The emergence of Cameron Wake might have made Roth expendable. Wake has 4.5 sacks in eight games this season.
Oglesby has spent time with Baltimore and Dallas. Alma-Francis was a second-round pick by Detroit in 2007.
Miami players had the day off Tuesday. The Dolphins (5-5) face the Buffalo Bills (3-7) on Sunday.
