NEW YORK — Though fliers grumble about delays, cancellations and luggage fees, several airlines get gold stars for performance from fliers in a survey released today.
Two small airlines — Virgin America and Midwest Airlines — received the highest scores of all U.S. airlines in Zagat Survey's annual poll, in which the travel and dining guide publisher asks fliers to rate how well 16 U.S. and 66 foreign airlines delivered on comfort, service and food.
The results show a "gradual, mild increase" in satisfaction with U.S. airlines, says Zagat Survey CEO Tim Zagat. "Consumers feel some marginal improvement in comfort and service."
"The bad news is that the major domestic airlines are becoming more and more like Greyhound buses in the sky."
CAMPBELL PROFIT UP 17% BUT REVENUE DOWN 2.1%
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. — Price-conscious grocery shoppers are being choosy about what they buy to cook at home, even from the value-oriented Campbell Soup Co.
The company reported yesterday that its first quarter profit rose 17 percent with the help of lower costs from increased efficiency in getting its products from its plants to store shelves, as well as lower prices for grain ingredients.
But revenue fell 2.1 percent to $2.2 billion with dips in sales for most of its categories, ranging from condensed soup to Prego pasta sauce.
HEWLETT-PACKARD EARNINGS RISE 14% ON COST-CUTTING
SAN FRANCISCO — Hewlett-Packard Co.'s profit jumped 14 percent in the latest quarter, helped by cost-cutting and better results from its technology services division.
Those factors helped offset the fact that four of HP's major divisions — personal computers, servers, software and printers — each reported big revenue declines from last year. HP's overall revenue fell 8 percent.
HP's results are a yardstick for measuring the health of overall technology spending.
