International karate tourneys tomorrow

The Honolulu International Karate-Do Championship, featuring more than 800 participants, will be held tomorrow at Mänoa Valley District Gym No. 2.

The 50th All-Hawai'i State Karate-Do Championship also will be part of the event, which features competitors from the Mainland, Japan, Australia, Canada and the Pan Pacific countries.

The event is hosted by the International Karate Federation and sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union.

Tournament events will include kata (forms), kumite (sparring), kobudo (weapons), as well as team kata and team kumite.

The event begins at 8 a.m. and tickets — priced at $10 for adults and $5 for children — will be available at the door.

Refreshments and lunch items will be on sale at the tournament.

A special seminar will be held today from 8 a.m. to about 2:30 p.m. Cost is $25.

Seminar instructors are Japan's Seiji Nishimura, Minobu Miki, and Hawai'i's George Kotaka and Elisa Au. Kotaka is a current world champion and Au is a former three-time world champion.
