No. 7 Duke holds off No. 13 UConn, 68-59

Associated Press

NEW YORK — The winningest matchup of Division I coaches was definitely one-sided.

Seventh-ranked Duke and Mike Krzyzewski won another NIT Season Tip-Off yesterday with a 68-59 victory over No. 13 Connecticut and Jim Calhoun.

"It was a big-time game, shots were so hard to come by, open shots. Both teams are very, very good defensively and you know, you get by one guy and it's hard to get to the bucket," Krzyzewski said. "But we rebounded very well and we played outstanding defense."

The Hall of Fame coaches set the record for total career wins in a game and Krzyzewski now has 839, fourth on the all-time list, and Calhoun still has 809, good for sixth place.

The Blue Devils (6-0) dominated the Huskies (4-1) in every category in extending its winning streak in the tournament to 12 games with their third straight title (2000, 2005) and fourth overall (1985).

The win also snapped Connecticut's four-game winning streak in the series with the last two victories both coming in Final Fours — the 1999 national championship game and the 2004 semifinals.

Tournament MVP Jon Scheyer had 19 points to lead Duke. Jerome Dyson led UConn with 15 points.

"The last time we lost a game when we held a team to eight field goals in the second half and 28 percent shooting, I can't remember," Calhoun said. "Quite frankly, they outwilled us and did the things you need to do to win a game."

NO. 1 KANSAS 112, TENNESSEE TECH 75

Cole Aldrich had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Tyshawn Taylor added 18 points and the host Jayhawks (5-0) overwhelmed the Golden Eagles (3-4) to extend the nation's longest home winning streak to 45 games.

FLORIDA 77, NO. 2 MICHIGAN STATE 74

Erving Walker hit a 3-pointer for a 72-71 lead with 1:56 left and Dan Werner made two free throws with 17 seconds for a 77-74 lead as the Gators (5-0) hung on to upset the Spartans (4-1) in the Legends Classic at Atlantic City, N.J. The Gators will play Rutgers, which beat Massachusetts, 83-75, in today's championship game.

WOMEN

NO. 1 CONNECTICUT 91, HOFSTRA 46

Maya Moore scored 23 points to lead the host Huskies (4-0) to a rout of the Pride (3-1) giving coach Geno Auriemma his 700th career victory in a first-round game of the WBCA Classic at Storrs, Conn. Auriemma is the eighth active coach to reach 700 Division I victories.

NO. 2 STANFORD 60, UTAH 41

Kayla Pedersen had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and the host Cardinal (5-0), after a slow start, opened a 24-11 advantage at halftime in handing the Utes (1-3) their third road loss. Nnemkadi Ogwumike had 17 points for the Cardinal, who won their 31st consecutive home game.
