ARCADIA, Calif. — Bold Chieftain won the $200,000 California Cup Classic after wagering favorite Grazen sustained a career-ending injury while leading in the stretch at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Grazen led all the way in the 1 1-8 mile race until jockey Garrett Gomez pulled the 3-year-old gray colt up past the eighth pole, allowing Bold Chieftain to come from behind and win by 1½ lengths.

Grazen injured his right front tendon, with trainer Mike Mitchell saying it appeared he tore the tendon.

Blackbriar, a 50-1 shot, also was pulled up in mid-stretch by jockey Brice Blanc after taking a bad step. Track officials said he broke the sesamoid bone in his right front foot and was euthanized.
