A late-night fire destroyed a home under construction Saturday on South Kihei Road.

Seven fire companies responded to the scene and worked through the predawn hours on Sunday to put out the blaze that engulfed an unoccupied two-story, single-family house.

A neighbor, Joseph Sugarman, said he had just returned Saturday evening from the Maui County Fair when he heard an explosion outside his home. Soon after, he saw the fire and called 911.

Authorities said they received the alarm about 9:30 p.m. By the time they arrived, the house was fully engulfed.
