BEIJING — Maria Sharapova was eliminated from the China Open yesterday, losing to Peng Shuai of China, 6-2, 6-4.

Six-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova moved into the quarterfinals by defeating Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.

Peng broke Sharapova twice in the first set, and again in the sixth game of the second. Sharapova saved two match points at 5-4 before losing to the 53rd-ranked player.

The former top-ranked Russian appeared to show the strain of her three-set win over Victoria Azarenka the night before.

"I've had matches where I didn't feel like I was maybe at the level that I wanted to be," said Sharapova, ranked 15th. "But I was able to fight through that and get through it, and today was just not one of those days, unfortunately."

Kuznetsova will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, who defeated Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada, 6-4, 6-4. Fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia, the highest remaining seed, routed Li Na of China, 6-2, 6-0.

Fourth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia advanced in the men's field, easily beating Philipp Kohlschreiber, 6-1, 6-0. Davydenko will face Marin Cilic of Croatia, who defeated Julien Benneteau of France, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.

Second-seeded Novak Djokovic trounced Viktor Troicki, 6-3, 6-0, in an all-Serbian match, while Fernando Verdasco defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero, 7-5, 6-4.

JAPAN OPEN

NO. 2 SEED TSONGA ROLLS TO SECOND ROUND

Second-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France defeated Mischa Zverev of Germany, 6-4, 6-3, yesterday to advance to the second round of the Japan Open.

The 24-year-old Tsonga had 10 aces and saved four of five break points at Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo.

Tsonga will face Davis Cup teammate Richard Gasquet, who defeated Philipp Petzschner of Germany, 6-3, 6-2.

It will be the seventh time the two Frenchmen have faced each other in the second round of the Japan Open.

"Richard is a good friend of mine," Tsonga said. "I know him and he knows me very well. It's going to be a good match."

Also, Andreas Beck defeated Rainer Schuettler, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3), in an all-German match to advance. The unseeded Beck had 12 aces and recovered a break in the third set before winning the tiebreaker.

Beck will face defending champion Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the second round.

DAVIS CUP

SITE TBA FOR SPAIN, CZECH REPUBLIC FINAL

The Davis Cup final between Spain and the Czech Republic in December will be played in either Valencia or Barcelona.

The Spanish tennis federation said yesterday the ITF had rejected bids by Tenerife and Malaga to host the best-of-five series from Dec. 4-6 because they were open-air venues. Malaga's stadium also fell under the 12,000-seating capacity minimum.

Paul Smith, the International Tennis Federation's executive director, said on his organization's Web site that Valencia's bid still needed to be analyzed. The ITF said Barcelona's Palau Sant Jordi could host again after being the site of Spain's first win in 2000.

The federation will announce its choice on Saturday.

Spain is the defending Davis Cup champion.
