The O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls volleyball playoffs are under way, with Red Conference (Division I) first-round matches held last night and White Conference (DII) first-round matches set for Tuesday.
Just like last year, a "modified double-elimination" format will be used. Last night's losers are eliminated, but starting with Tuesday's Red second round a team can work its way out of the losers' bracket and return to the championship semifinals.
Moanalua and Kahuku tied for first in the Red Eastern Division at 11-1, but Moanalua earned the No. 1 seed via a tiebreaker calculating a "higher percentage of (sets) won over total (sets) played." The teams split against each other.
'Aiea won the Red West with a perfect 12-0 record, and Pearl City was runner-up at 10-2. The top two seeds in each division earned first-round byes. Tuesday's second-round matches will be played at Moanalua and 'Aiea.
In the White Conference, Kailua (11-1) won the East and Kapolei (9-2) won the West.
In the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, Punahou (16-0) clinched the DI first-round title and an automatic state tournament berth with Tuesday's victory over Island Pacific. Hawai'i Baptist (14-2) clinched the DII first-round title and automatic state tourney berth with Tuesday's win over Christian Academy.
The ILH will begin its second-round tournaments on Tuesday.
