Deputy prosecutor to run for job in '12
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Franklin "Don" Pacarro has announced that he will run for city prosecutor in 2012.
Prosecutor Peter Carlisle previously announced he will run for mayor, either in 2010 or 2012.
Pacarro is the first person to announce his candidacy for the office since Carlisle went public with his intentions.
Pacarro, 52, has been a prosecutor 23 years, according a press release issued by his campaign committee. As director of the Felony Trials Division in his office, he supervises 27 attorneys.
WOMAN DIES IN FIRE IN UPCOUNTRY MAUI
One person was killed and another suffered severe burns in a fire that destroyed an Ulupalakua house early yesterday morning, Maui County officials said.
Fire crews from Kula, Makawao and Kahului responded to the fire on Kini Drive in Ulupalakua.
The fire was reported at 1:13 a.m. and was under control by 2:17 a.m. Fire officials said the house had three occupants.
One was uninjured. A man who was badly burned was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center and then taken to a burn unit at Straub Hospital on O'ahu.
During the cleanup and dousing of remaining hot spots, the body of a woman was discovered. She is believed to be a visitor from Washington state. Her identity has not been released.
Maui Fire Department and police arson investigators estimate damage at $140,000. There were no signs of foul play, officials said.
