KANE'OHE — Winning a battle of fumble-itis, Kahuku rallied past Castle, 30-6, last night to complete an unbeaten regular season in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference Eastern Division.

A rain-soaked crowd of about 2,000 at Castle watched the Red Raiders — ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improve to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the OIA Red East. The Knights fell to 5-3, 3-3.

Both teams will have first-round byes in the upcoming league playoffs. Kahuku is the East's No. 1 seed; Castle is No. 3.

Intermittent showers made for poor conditions in last night's tune-up, helping to account for a combined 17 fumbles. The Knights lost seven of them, with one leading directly to a Red Raiders touchdown.

Kahuku capitalized throughout the game with a steady pass rush, one of which led to a safety midway through the first quarter when Castle quarterback Jaymason Lee was sacked in the end zone by Veteson Sauni and Kawehena Johnson for a 2-0 lead.

Knights linebacker Cy Pana recovered a Red Raiders fumble later in the quarter, and Castle cashed in immediately with Lee's 45-yard TD pass to Shaydon Kehano for a 6-2 lead with 2:49 remaining.

But that would be it for the Knights' offense, as fumbles and the Kahuku defense took over.

Hauoli Jamora recovered a Castle fumble and ran it into the end zone from 7 yards out, and Cameron Mercado's extra point gave the Red Raiders the lead for good at 9-7 with 3:24 left in the half.

After Kahuku forced a three-and-out following the ensuing kickoff, backup quarterback Sage Kaka led the Red Raiders on a five-play, 59-yard drive capped by his 3-yard scramble for a touchdown. Mercado's PAT made it 16-6 one second before intermission.

The teams exchanged fumbles to open the second half, then Kahuku marched 65 yards in nine plays culminating in Kaka's 1-yard play-action TD pass to Fonoivasa Mata'afa. Mercado's extra point made it 23-6 with 5:17 remaining in the third quarter.

On the following possession, Tigi Hill intercepted a swing pass by Lee and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown.
