An estimated 500 students lined up for flu immunizations at Kalihi Kai Elementary School this morning as the state kicked off its free, in-school flu vaccination program.

The immunizations delivered today were for seasonal flu; another round of in-school clinics is scheduled later this year to deliver vaccinations for the H1N1 variety, also known as swine flu.
Last year, more than 62,000 children were vaccinated in the state program known as “Protect Hawaii’s Keiki: Stop Flu At School.” Approximately 68,000 are expected to receive vaccine by the time this year’s in-school clinics have been completed, the state Health Department said in a news release.
Teachers and school staff are also receiving the vaccine.
This is the third year of the state program.
