SHANGHAI — Reigning U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro has retired from the Shanghai Masters with an apparent wrist injury.
The Argentine was trailing Austrian Jurgen Melzer 7-5, 2-1 in his second-round match Wednesday before shaking his wrist and retiring.
The third-seeded del Potro follows Andy Roddick and Tommy Haas in retiring from the tournament with injury, while Roger Federer and Andy Murray elected not to play on fitness grounds.
